Those lined up at Chinook mall looking for Boxing Day deals Friday we’re met by a crowd 108,000 people throughout the day.
To put things in perspective, that is a larger population than in the City of Red Deer.
In the past the mall has peaked at around 90,000 on Boxing Day, but both in 2013 and 2014 nearly a tenth of Calgarians hit the mall to snatch up the savings.
Chinook General Manager Paige O’Neil gave some possible reasons for the increase.
“The addition of Nordstrom’s this Christmas, no construction in the mall–it kind of alleviated a lot of the opportunity to park, and have that anchor. And the entire mall was fully leased for Christmas this year so that definitely plays an impact,” O’Neil said.
She said those who did not want to brave the Boxing Day madness are not to worry; most retailers have the same sales until the end of January.
