Mad Cow disease back in the province

It’s another case of mad cow disease in Alberta.

The Canadian food inspection agency confirms a bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) infected cow has been found in the province, the first case since 2011.

The CFIA says no part of the animal’s carcass entered the human food or animal feed systems and they are working to find out how it got infected.

They say the case should not affect current exports of Canadian cattle and Canada continues to be designated a “controlled BSE risk” country.

In 2003, Alberta’s beef industry was devastated when an infected cow was found in northwestern Alberta.
