Moose ‘Valentine’ to be released into the wild

A moose on the loose in the southeast Saturday morning has been safely captured and is going to be released back into the wild.

The Calgary Police Service and Fish and Wildlife were able to get the large animal into the Peigan Trail Storage facility, when a customer opened the gate to exit.

Once inside, authorities asked an employee to close the gate so they could safely contain the animal.

They let the female moose wonder around to get comfortable before taking any action.

A few hours later, officers got up on the roof so they could get a clear shot to tranquilize her.

The 900 lb female didn’t go down easy; a second dart had to be fired.

Len Lupyczuk, with District Fish and Wildlife of High River, said moose wonder into town all the time, because it’s easy for them to get turned around.

“What happens is moose on the outskirts or in the green spaces, they get scared or for some reason overnight they start wondering and then they basically come strolling into the city, and soon as they get scared, they get scared the wrong way, and pretty soon they’re on the wrong road,” Lupyczuk said.

The owner of Peigan Trail Storage, Manev Lamba, appropriately named the female moose ‘Valentine’.
