Council draws up infrastructure wish list

City Hall has compiled a wish list of infrastructure projects they’d like to see completed, if funding becomes available from either the province or Ottawa.

It includes a multi-sport recreation facility, newer firefighting equipment, and four car C-Train improvements.

The list of 25 projects is estimated to cost more than $2.6-billion.

The four year budget approved by city council last fall didn’t include money for these projects, but Councillor Shane Keating tells City News, it’s important for city hall to be prepared.

“The interesting thing of the list, you know, it talked about when and where and how and all of those sorts of things, the jobs and a number of things like that,” he said. “That ability to go forward is what we need to do.”

Mayor Naheed Nenshi says there’s talk with higher ups about having a 2008 style stimulus, “shovel-ready” program.

“So, it was important for us to understand what is ‘shovel-ready’, what have we got that might create jobs in the short term, and what impact would it have on the community,” he said.

Nenshi says choosing a project would depend on the criteria for a stimulus program, how much money is available and if there are conditions on job creation.
