After fire broke out at The Alpha House Saturday morning, the facility is pushing for a Sunday afternoon re-opening.
Adam Melynk, with the rehabilitation facility, told 660news the entire community came together to help those who rely on the downtown programs.
“The Mustard Seed and certainly Calgary as a whole; certainly a lot of condolences and well wishes, and then lots of support, too,” he said.
The Drop In Centre was also quick to help those displaced by the fire. Melynk added staff would not have been able to reopen without such a strong showing of support from the community.
The arson unit is investigating the fire that broke out in a bathroom overnight Friday.
Acting detective Jack Russell said police, fire and paramedics all responded to the scene in Calgary’s core, in the 200 block of 15th Avenue SE.
Police confirmed to 660News a man in his early 30’s died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.
“Approximately 150-plus clients and staff were safely evacuated with no other injuries reported,” Russell said.
Damage was limited to the bathroom and is estimated at $5,000.
While that bathroom will remain closed for repairs, the Alpha House should otherwise be fully functioning.
Staff say they are planning a time to remember the man who died.
