Legislature back in session Tuesday

The provincial legislature is preparing to resume on Tuesday and with everything that’s happened over the past couple weeks and months, it’s expected to be an action-packed session.
Everyone is waiting to see how the province will balance the budget, and recent comments from Premier Jim Prentice saying all Albertans share in the blame for the situation we face are hovering under the shadow of a possible spring election.
Lori Williams, Mount Royal University Political Scientist, tells City News you can expect the opposition to tee-off on those remarks from Prentice, which he’s tried to walk back from by saying they were taken out of context.
She explains why the comments and perspective are so problematic.
“It actually shifts attention to the past and the past of the Tory party and I think, Jim Prentice would rather things be looking to the future and the work that needs to be done to try and address the problems the government is facing,” she said.
As for why we haven’t seen an apology, Williams says he may be worried about looking weak or indecisive.
“His political instincts up until this point have been pretty good. He’s managed most of the controversies that have come up quite effectively. It’s very difficult to come back from a remark like that,” she explained.
Another thing to watch for: how the nine MPs who defected from the Wildrose to the PCs will fit in with their new party, in particular, Danielle Smith’s future.
