Some political observers say there was one surprise in the less-than-shocking announcement over the weekend that saw Rick Hanson named as the Tory candidate for Calgary-Cross.
Premier Jim Prentice appointed the former Calgary police chief in a move that’s being called unnecessary.
Mount Royal University policy studies professor Lori Williams, tells City News, Hanson could have gone through the nomination contest process with seven other candidates.
“I mean this is an extraordinarily popular, high profile, well respected man and in the interest of democracy I think it might have made more sense to actually run a nomination race there,” explained Williams.
The widely touted spring election is yet to be called with Prentice once again staying aloof during this appointment announcement, only saying “if and when” there is an election.
