Concerns raised about 5 Street cycle track

Active transportation continues to be a priority in Calgary, and we’re days away from the city setting up another cycle track pilot project on a busy downtown road.
There are serious concerns about the timing of the project on 5 Street as motorists and pedestrians are already dealing with a lane closure at the intersection of 5 Street and 7 Avenue S.W., where there is on-going construction.
Ward four councillor Sean Chu told City News taking away another lane for the cycle track could mean 5th Street would be reduced to one lane of traffic for about a block, which could result in massive congestion.
“One lane’s already shut down for construction,” Chu said. “If we’re going to shut down another lane, it could be problematic because we’ll go from four or five lanes down to two. I have some concerns about that.”
Chu said common sense would suggest the city should wait until the construction is complete before the cycle track is put in.
Opponents to the project continue to argue the cycle track increases congestion and makes it more difficult for people to park in a city where that’s already challenging enough.
