Calgary pianist tackles rare feat – again

The second performance in a rare concert series is being held in Calgary Saturday night.

The solo piano sonatas of Beethoven, all 32 of them, are being performed by Charles Foreman.

The local pianist first performed the sonatas in their entirety just over a decade ago but is endeavouring to do it again.

Only six Canadian pianists have ever performed all of the sonatas and Foreman thinks it’ll take him about a year of concerts to get them all done.

“The interesting thing about Beethoven is that he never repeated himself. I mean, many composters have a sort of successful formula for a piece and then they write very similar pieces over and over again, they sort of follow that formula.” said Foreman. “Beethoven seems to, every time he wrote a sonata he said ‘hey, that’s great. Well, I won’t do that again.'”

Saturday night’s concert is also a benefit for Mountain View Connection, supporting emerging musicians.

The concert is at Christ Church Elbow Park at 8 p-m.
