National Music Centre construction update

As the warm spring weather continues, construction of the new National Music Centre in Calgary’s East Village is still on schedule.

The organization’s President and CEO Andrew Mosker tells 660News, the exterior framing of the ”sky bridge” is almost complete, so when you look at the building now you’ll be able to see more exterior curves.

“You can see how it swoops into 4th Street, so when we use that space for events and for all kinds of just interesting programs when the National Music Centre opens, it’s going to be a very popular destination for looking south and looking north into the city, but also one of the more impressive architectural features of the building,” he said.

Mosker says the original bricks of the King Eddy have begun to be reassembled and reattached to the north face of the new building.

Staff are now busy organizing up to 500 musical artifacts before they head to their new home and only one instrument has been moved to the new building and it’s the 30-foot long Rolling Stones’ mobile recording studio.

“It’s inside the new west block just adjacent to the King Eddy and it’s been encased in a dust-free, large wood box that’s completely sealed, for obvious reasons in the middle of the construction site, so that’s been moved over,” Mosker added.

All the other artifacts are being prepared and catalogued to be moved over, which won’t happen until the late fall.

The National Music Centre on 9th Avenue and 4th Street, S.E. is set to open in spring of 2016.
