The long road ahead for Nepal

Nepal is in shambles.

Seven days after the devastating earthquake that rocked the Asian nation, thousands are still in need of help.

“Nepal was already one of the poorest countries in the world, it’s going to take years,” David Morley, the president and CEO of UNICEF Canada, said.

He called the event the worst natural disaster since the earthquake in Haiti.

He said they are working as fast as they can to help keep those most vulnerable safe.

“To get the basic health that we need to also be able to get clean water and latrines, so that we can prevent diseases coming to the children,” he said.

With the monsoon season only a few weeks away, thousands will be at heightened risk of diseases like cholera and diarrhoeal infections, and the country is more vulnerable to landslides and floods.

UNICEF Canada will focus on schools in the distant future, so children in Nepal can get some kind of normalcy back to their lives.

Morley said they are upping their fundraising efforts.
