Grumbles over Car2Go’s $1 increase email

Some Calgarians using Car2Go are complaining about what appears to be an increase in the cost of a trip.

The car-sharing service sent out an email this weekend saying the insurance deductible for when users get into a crash is going down from a $1,000 to $250.

To pay for the discount, starting in June, Car2Go indicated in the email they will charge an extra $1 per trip for the first 90 trips a driver takes each year.

Some users are taking to social media expressing their frustration — calling it a cash grab — while others say they are okay with the lower deductible.

Some users said they will walk more once the change comes into effect.

In a written correspondence with 660News, a Car2Go spokesperson has said the following:

“All car2go members were notified about car2go’s updated Terms and Conditions, Trip Processes, and Fee Schedule, which will go into effect on June 1, 2015. The updated agreements now better reflect the services car2go provides, are easier to read, and provides our members with additional clarity about car2go’s policies and their responsibilities.

Included in the updates is a new benefit for our Members – a lower deductible from $1,000 to $250, which will reduce our members’ financial exposure in the unfortunate event that they are involved in an accident or damage a car2go during their trip. To offset the $750 reduction in our member’s deductible, we will be including a $1 Fee to each car2go trip our members take – up to 90 trips in a calendar year.

At car2go, we are committed to helping people get from Point A to Point B in a safe and affordable way.

The lower deductible supports this effort, and we are pleased to introduce it to all of our members across North America.”
