Vandals target multiple bus shelters over the weekend

The city is dealing with a rash of bus shelter vandalism incidents.

Brian Whitelaw, with the City of Calgary tells 660News, this past weekend was an especially costly one.

“We had 35 reported bus shelters that have been damaged, where at least one panel of the bus shelter has been broken. We’re looking probably at an overall cost right now somewhere in the 20 to 30-thousand dollar range,” says Whitelaw.

Whitelaw says the vandalism isn’t contained to any one part of the city so that likely means one or a group of offenders could be responsible for most of them.

He says, the city is looking at ways to minimize the damage from more durable glass to the use of CCTV or similar technologies.

Whitelaw adds, they want to thank Calgarians for continuing to report these types of incidents and if you see a crime in progress you’re asked to call 9-1-1.
