Downtown 5th Ave getting two reverse lanes

Commuters in Calgary’s core will soon have two new lanes of outbound traffic during the afternoon rush.

The city is set to implement a lane reversal on 5th Avenue with the aim at reducing those daily drive home delays.

It will be much like the lane reversal in place on Memorial Drive.

Starting May 19th Pat Grisak, senior leader with the City’s Traffic Division, said two of the five eastbound lanes on 5th Avenue will instead accommodate westbound traffic to ease the agonizing traffic queues on 4th and 6th Avenues.

“This project involves reversing the traffic flow direction in two lanes of 5th Ave, the northern most lanes, from 7th Street to the west end of downtown to accommodate westbound flow and provide another outbound route,” Grisak said.

Typically, 4th and 6th Avenues handle 3,500 cars an hour during the afternoon rush. If the six-month pilot project helps to ease the squeeze, the City plans to make the reversal permanent.
