Long weekend campers urged to use common sense

It’s the May long weekend and that means many Albertans are dusting off their camping equipment and are preparing to head into the wilderness.

However, before you unpack your sleeping bag and start singing Kumbaya, you need to be prepared.

Tim Chamberlain says the majority of forest fires are human caused, and they want visitors to take caution.

“When they are leaving their campfire, soak, stir, and soak again,” he said.

Chamberlain says remember, you’re sharing the wilderness with bears and cougars, so, use common sense.

“Don’t leave your food close to your campsite, and make sure it’s covered and sealed so you’re not encouraging any unwanted visitors,” he said.

Chamberlain expects all 250 campgrounds across the province will be at full capacity.
