Cyclists shouted down by drivers for not using cycle tracks — that aren’t open.

The downtown cycle track debate is heating up, and it’s not just Twitter wars as the pilot gets closer to launch date: episodes of road rage appear to be on the rise as well.

Drivers frustrated by the bottleneck caused by the lane reductions in place for the track are letting cyclists know.

Bike Calgary President Kimberly Nelson says cyclists are being shouted at by drivers for not using the designated lanes.

“Somebody was yelling at one of my students to get into the cycle track, and of course, we can’t because it’s closed, so, it’s almost just a matter of everyone just paying attention to what’s going on and understanding that bikes are not required to ride in the cycle track even when it’s open,” she said.

The network is slated to be fully open for bikes by the end of June, and Nelson’s point is valid: there is no law requiring cyclists to use the lanes when the cycle track is up and running.

She says if drivers are frustrated by the pilot project, they should call 311 to offer their feedback rather than holler at the two wheelers.
