Wildfires force more evacuations in northern Alberta

The Municipal District of Lesser Slave River is under a state of emergency and residents are being told to leave because of a serious wildfire affecting a large area.

This includes residents 15 kilometres on either side of Mortonville, who have been asked to report to the M.D. office, where accommodations can be arranged.

Another wildfire burning in northern Alberta has forced about 2000 people from their homes.

The Municipal District of Opportunity says a state of emergency is also in place for that area, about 330 kilometres north of Edmonton.

About 1000 residents of Wabasca and another 1000 people from Bigstone Cree Nation have checked into reception centres.

Mounties have been going door-to-door to convince residents to leave their homes.

The fire is just one of 70 burning in the province, 29 of those are out of control as of Monday at 7 pm.

This follows a full out fire ban being ordered earlier in the day for all of Alberta’s forests.

The ban includes all open fires, campfires, and charcoal briquettes.

Portable propane fire pits and gas or propane stoves designed for cooking are still allowed.

There’s no fire ban in place for the City of Calgary yet but CFD spokesperson Carol Henke says failing to properly dispose of cigarettes or putting out your backyard fire pit can be extremely dangerous.
