Calgary flood info sessions happening this week

Two flood readiness open houses are scheduled in Calgary over the next few days heading into high water season.

The first event is Wednesday night at Foothills Academy on 37 Street NW, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

The second, focusing on the Elbow River, happens Thursday night at the B’Nai Tikvah Social Hall on 47 Avenue SW.

One of the major projects in the works on the Elbow is a multi-million dollar upgrade of the gates on the Glenmore Dam.

The city’s river engineering spokesperson Frank Frigo said this project will be beneficial for Calgary’s future.

“It essentially involves replacing a 1.5 metre timber stop logs with a 2.5 metre high steel gate system. This would allow greater storage capacity both for flood and for drought resilience,” he said.

Construction is expected to begin next year on the $70-million project, but Frigo points out it’s just one of several measure being taken to try to prevent another catastrophe in 2013.
