Alberta’s first midwifery grads make history

It was an historic moment for Mount Royal University Thursday.

Eight students graduated from the first ever midwifery program in the province.

Demand for midwives has grown in recent years, and Mount Royal’s Dean of Health and Community Studies, Chad London, said there’s a big shortage.

He says four percent of the 55,000 births a year in Alberta are cared for by midwives, while in B.C. and Ontario the number is closer to 15 per cent.

Most of the women who walked the stage Thursday already have jobs lined up.
