Calgary firefighters battle two blazes within half an hour

Two fires broke out within minutes of each other in Calgary early Sunday morning, including a two alarm blaze in the northeast.

The first call came in around 1:30 a.m., to a mobile home park at Blackfoot Trail and Southland Drive in the southeast.

Flames were coming from a kitchen window when crews arrived, but two people who had been inside the trailer managed to get out safely.

Battalion Chief Al Magwood tells 660News, what they’re looking at for a cause. “We’re assuming it was something cooking related, but we’re not sure at this time,” he said.

Magwood says the second call came in while crews were still on the scene of the first.

“While this one was still unfolding, we had reports of a second house fire up in the community of Rundle, on 25 Ave. northeast, which turned out to be an abandoned house. The incident commander called for a second alarm to confirm that he had enough people to deal with this. the fire was contained to the abandoned house.”

Flames were coming from the roof of the building. Once the fire was was brought under control, firefighters conducted a search, but found no one inside.

Firewatch will remain at the scene, checking for hot spots, and the investigation into a cause is underway.
