The American Thoracic Society has released a statement which suggests good sleep as essential to maintain one’s health, with a lack of sleep dangerous to individuals and public safety.
The statement was published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine and said less than six hours or more than nine hours of sleep per night may be linked to negative health outcomes.
However, the ATS sleep requirements do change with age and suggest a shift of school start times for teenagers to be later in the morning.
Their statement also said doctors will need to stress the importance of good quality sleep to their patients and both parents and daycare providers will have to get children started with healthy sleeping habits early on in life.
