A woman who was found dead in her Ranchlands home in northwest Calgary on October 11th was remembered by friends and family Sunday evening at Olympic Plaza.
Christa Cachene was a 26-year-old mother of two, and was pregnant when she died.
Laura Ducharme, co-chair of Strengthening the Spirit, the group that planned the vigil, told 660 NEWS, this is just another case that points to a bigger problem.
“We have a high rate within the city of violence against Aboriginal women,” Ducharme said. “The percentage is too high. Our victims are far too high on the stat list, for one thing. We need to continue to do this, so we can find answers in where we can put our Aboriginal women at less risk. That’s our goal.”
Police have arrested and charged 18-year-old Isaih Riel Rider with second-degree murder in relation to Cachene’s death.
