Province commits flood mitigation cash

The provincial environment minister has announced nearly $300-million to protect communities along the Elbow River, in case of a flood similar to 2013.

Shannon Phillips has committed $297-million specifically for areas on the banks of the Elbow, which were decimated two years ago by historic flooding.

On top of that, the government is providing $150-million in funding over 10 years to the City of Calgary for local projects.

Also, $33-million will go for flood mitigation in Bragg Creek, and other areas in Redwood Meadows, west of Calgary.

When it comes to protection from flooding on the Bow River, the province says a working group is being struck looking at the impacts on both flood and drought.

Five new multi-year studies are now underway to identify hazards and maps for the Bow, Elbow, Sheep, Highwood and Peace Rivers.
