Educators are finding both good and bad in Tuesday’s provincial budget.
“We’re seeing that enrollment growth is being funded, we’re seeing that there’s going to be an inflationary increase for the first time in three years, and there’s some good measures in the years ahead,” Alberta Teachers Association Spokesperson Jonathan Teghtmeyer said.
However, he points out the budget doesn’t address supports for special needs students or programs for English language learners.
He also believes it doesn’t go far enough to address growing class sizes.
Meanwhile, Mark Schroeder with the Mount Royal Faculty Association is happy with what he saw.
“Generally speaking, we’re pleased that after several years of neglect, and cutting to post-secondary education, even when the price of oil was high, the government has taken steps to halt further erosion. So, while the increases to PSE funding are relatively modest, they will at least allow funding to keep pace with inflation,” he said.
