Police looking for third suspect, after officer-involved shooting

The scene is being described as chaotic by Calgary’s police chief, after a hit and run turned into an officer-involved shooting.

A cyclist was struck at Dermot Baldwin Way and 4 Avenue SE around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Police received information the suspect vehicle, a black SUV, was stolen and the driver may have hit the victim intentionally.

The situation escalated, when the vehicle returned to the scene of the crime: the suspects drove directly at police, as paramedics were still treating the seriously injured cyclist.

Police Chief Roger Chaffin said officers only had moments to act, one diving into a police van that was rammed by the SUV, the other firing his weapon.

“Our members responded as our training would allow them to. You can appreciate these things happen in seconds and milliseconds and you have to make really quick decisions to look after yourself and look after the public,” he said.

He said the shocking and “wanton recklessness” of the incident is something all Calgarians should be concerned about.

“That you would have returned to the scene of a violent act, and then take the time to deliberately attack police officers on scene,” he said.

The vehicle continued on, coming to rest on Riverfront Avenue S.E.

Two suspects were taken into custody, including one man suffering from a gunshot wound and a woman who was not hurt.

Another potential suspect is still on the loose.

Police are exploring whether this is connected to numerous other thefts and dangerous driving incidents that happened earlier in the day.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team has been called in.

According to the government of Alberta website, ASIRT investigates all incidents or complaints involving serious injury or death of any person that may have resulted from the actions of a police officer.
