Man charged with attempted murder in brazen hit and run

A 20-year-old Calgary man is facing serious charges, including attempted murder, after reportedly hitting a cyclist and driving right at police officers before he was shot.

Calgary Police Service arrested Einar James Bearhat on Tuesday after it was called to a hit-and-run at Dermot Baldwin Way and 4th Ave. S.E. Officers say he was driving a stolen SUV and intentially struck the cyclist then left the scene.

The SUV reappeared while paramedics were treating the cyclist and Bearhat allegedly steered right into officers before hitting a police van. CPS says one officer took evasive and decisive action and dove out of the way and gain cover inside a vehicle.

Police say a member discharged his firearm while the SUV continued to drive away before stopping on Riverfront Ave. S.E.

Bearhat was taken to hospital and has since been released, while the cyclist was rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The suspect is also charged with assault with a weapon and possession of stolen property.

A woman that was arrested at the time has since been released with no charges in relation to this incident. A third potential suspect who left the scene remains outstanding.

The SUV used in the hit-and-run on Dermot Baldwin Way has been confirmed to be associated with other violent incidents that occurred throughout the day, but suspects and their connection to those crimes is still under investigation.
