A 35-year-old Calgary man who dodged police for months is now behind bars and faces several charges for vehicle thefts around the city.
The Calgary Police Service Economic Crimes Unit Auto Theft Team executed an operation in April 2015, which resulted in a warrant out for Tyler Timothy John. He was charged for one count of possession for stolen property over $5,000 and one count of trafficking stolen property over $5,000.
At about 1:30 a.m. Friday, officers saw a man trying to break into a vehicle located on 2nd St. and 39th Ave. N.E. Police arrested the suspect and later realized he drove to the scene in a stolen vehicle with three other people.
Officers seized a three-foot long machete from that vehicle and the investigation continues.
According to police, John was also charged with one count each of theft of motor vehicle, attempting to commit an indictable offence, possession of break-in instruments, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and four counts of being unlawfully at large.
Police said they take vehicle thefts very seriously and they’re encouraging the public to report suspicious people who may be committing a crime.
