Calgary event looks for next great Paralympian

The hunt is on for Canada’s next Paralympian, and it comes to Calgary this weekend.

People with physical disabilities will get the chance to try out sports at Canada Olympic Park under the watchful eye of Paralympic coaches and former athletes.

Matt Hallat has one leg, and has been skiing on the Canadian Paralympic team for 13 years.

He says the sport took him around the world, an opportunity he likely would not have had otherwise.

“Sweden, Chile, New Zealand, Korea, Japan, all over Europe, all over North America, so, it’s been quite an adventure for the better part of my life,” Hallat said.

He explains Saturday’s event is all about giving people a chance.

“Trying some different sports and really having fun with them and enjoying them, because ultimately, if they’re enjoying what they’re doing, they’re going to be motivated to keep trying to get better at,” he said.
