Calgarians took to the streets Saturday afternoon, in support of Burundi.
Alain Nibayubahe organized the protests, and said the purpose behind them was to bring awareness about the human rights violations currently taking place in the African country.
He said innocent people are being killed for contesting the current president’s re-election into office, and the situation is beginning to resemble the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
“We want to bring this exposure to Canadians and the international community, so we come together and avoid another genocide in the region, or even anywhere else,” Nibayubahe said. “We need to come together and say no to the genocide, no to the killings, no to the violations of human rights. At the end of the day, we are united to say never again. We don’t need another genocide.”
He added, at least 100 people in Burundi have already died.
The march began at Eau Claire, and ended at City Hall.
A fundraising event was held after the protests, with all proceeds going towards humanitarian efforts in Burundi.
