Judge grants injunction against Uber drivers

A Calgary judge is ordering Uber drivers off the road.

A judge granted the City of Calgary a temporary injunction against 57 drivers.

City lawyer Colleen Sinclair says injuctions filed in other Canadian Cities were against the ride sharing app Uber, which is why they failed. She explains the company doesn’t necessary fall under the bylaws.

“The drivers are the ones that are actually offering the rides for compensation without a taxi plate licence, and that was an easier argument to make. In fact, the judge in Edmonton when dismissing Edmonton’s application, specifically said the people really breaching your bylaw here are really the drivers,” said Sinclair.

The injunction prevents Uber drivers from operating in the city until Dec. 17, when the city will seek a permanent injunction.
