Potential of ward boundary changes in Calgary

A debate got underway Monday in City Hall in regards to tweaking the ward boundaries.

The argument for some councillors is that there are more than 100,000 residents in some wards and the current boundaries aren’t representational.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said a report next year won’t reveal big changes.

“I would be very, very, very shocked if you saw massive changes to this map as a result of political pressure,” he said. “There may be a few neighbourhoods who have to move around in order to bring the populations back into line with council’s policy.”

Council voted 8-7 to give administration a chance to change the map in accordance with city policy on population formula.

A report is due back sometime in 2016.
