Falling snow makes for slow go on Calgary roads

While large parts of central and southern Alberta dealt with wicked weather Monday, Calgary was spared.
That changed Tuesday.
Snow fell all morning, making for a slick trip around the city.
The timing couldn’t be worse with most of the snow coming during the morning rush hour, with expectations is will taper off into the afternoon.
Meteorologist David Spence says drifting snow could cause problems for drivers, even after it stops.
“The wind is going to be quite strong with gusts up to 60 km/h through much of the day today, at least much of the morning, so there is going to be some drifting and likely reduced visibility and blowing snow in open areas as well,” he said.
The good news, at least early on, is that salt and sand should help.
Brittany Kustra with the City of Calgary Roads says crews were ready.
“We had them out there last night putting down anti-ice material and they were working all through the night as the snow fell trying to clear those major commuter roads,” she explained, adding it will be all hands on deck throughout the day to make sure it’s a good drive home.
It’s a mixed bag outside of the city, with the Alberta Motor Association reporting a fairly even split on the highways, from partially covered to completely covered roads.
Snowfall warnings extended from south of Red Deer all the way up past Edmonton, from British Columbia to Saskatchewan.
You’ll need to break out the shovel for this one as Spence thinks enough will fall and it will stay cold enough for this snow to stick around.
