This article is more than 5 years old.
He’s the well-known Calgary meteorologist who shaved off his mustache and revealed a big secret at the beginning of the month.
Now David Spence is discussing his Movember journey.
“The response has been somewhat overwhelming,” he said. “It’s been very gratifying to see how Calgarians and Albertans have come together to join the cause.”
Spence’s campaign was spurred by his shocking announcement that he was diagnosed with prostate cancer back in 2012, a secret very few were aware of.
He was flooded with messages of support from Calgary and across the province and his campaign raised over $16,500 for the charity, ranking him 43rd in the country.
“It was something that I just had to get out there if you will, because keeping it a secret is very hard work and it was a great opportunity,” he told 660 NEWS. “My own goal was to raise awareness and my own goal was to have men in their 40s and toward 50 get themselves tested, so that they could perhaps get early detection, as I did, which saved my life.”
Spence said while the money is very satisfying, it’s meant much more hearing stories of Albertans going to the doctor.
With his mustache well back in all its glory, the big question now is if he will shave it again and he admits it’s under consideration.
“After the mustache came off, a lot of people said hey, you look better without one!” he said. “So I’m thinking maybe that’s the way to go, but we’ll see.”
He said he’s going to try to make the decision over the next day and he’s also posed the question to his Twitter followers.
