The first time on Santa’s knee is not always what you hope.
That visit with the big guy in red is often scary for the little ones and, well, so much for a great experience for your child – never mind that picture you wanted.
Ellen Percival with Calgary’s Child Magazine tells 660 NEWS that there are a few things you can do to improve your chances and reduce your youngster’s stress.
“Talk to your child ahead of time about what’s going to happen, just in case they’ve forgotten from last time or maybe this is their first time,” says Percival. “It does help to go to the mall a little bit ahead of time and let your child watch other kids and let them see what happens.”
She also recommends going to see Santa during a quieter time at the mall and to schedule the visit when it’s your child’s best time of day (so they’re not hungry or tired.)
If they’re especially nervous, they can stand beside St. Nick instead of sitting on his knee.
