Alberta Environment Minister Shannon Phillips says she’s received nothing but positive feedback about the province’s climate change plan in Paris.
This after Canada announced an aggressive target of reducing global warming to just 1.5 degrees Celsius, rather than the two degrees discussed before the summit.
Phillips wasn’t clear on whether she was informed of the announcement beforehand, but said Alberta wants to collaborate with other jurisdictions across the country.
“That respect for our unique position and respect for the fact that our energy resources do power the Canadian economy to a [sic] large extent — that recognition is across the board in Canadian political life,” Phillips said. “Alberta has put forward a credible, practical piece of policy leadership in which we will bend the curve on our emissions.”
“Keeping in mind that we are an energy producing province, different provinces have different abilities to reduce and I think the federal government understands that.”
She promised parts of Alberta’s climate change plan would be coming together in 2016, including details on the emissions cap.
