17 Avenue Transitway info sessions to be held this week

The city of Calgary is holding information sessions for both residents and businesses near 17 Avenue S.E. to get more details about transit service.

The city hopes work for a project being launched next year, the 17 Avenue Southeast Transitway project, will not disrupt an already busy area.

Construction on the project, which will include bus-only lanes from 26 Street S.E. to Hubalta Road, is expected to start in the summer of 2016, with completion sometime in late 2018.

In a release, Howard Kai, a senior transportation engineer with The City of Calgary, said the project is an important part of The City’s goal to improve transit service.

“It’s really about providing Calgarians with improved travel options,” Kai said. “People are more likely to choose public transit over their cars if they know it’s reliable and provides consistent service. More people taking transit means a reduction in cars on the road and, hopefully, less congestion, less traffic and less time spent on the road.”

Calgarians are invited to go to the ArtBOX at 1807 42 Avenue S.E. to learn more about it all.

Project staff will be on hand to answer any questions.

The sessions will run 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. from Wednesday Dec. 9 to Friday, Dec. 11.

It is currently unfunded, but will extend east past Stoney Trail and west to downtown.
