A city committee will explore the idea of assigning a heritage label to two fire halls in Calgary Wednesday.
Fire Hall #2, located on Macleod Trail downtown, and Fire Hall #6, now the Outdoor Resource Centre at the corner of 10 Street and Memorial Drive, are being recommended for the honours.
The two brick buildings were completed in 1912 and 1909 respectively.
Clint Robertson is the senior heritage planner with the City of Calgary.
“These designations afford the fire halls’ protection, so that they’ll be preserved in perpetuity,” he explained, which essentially means any changes to the properties would have to be approved by the Heritage department first,” says Clint Robertson, senior heritage planner with the City of Calgary
These buildings wouldn’t be the first fire halls to get the designation: Fire Hall #1, now a Budget Rental Car outlet downtown is protected, as is an old fire hall in Bridgeland, which has since been turned into a residence.
