Around 500 people showed up at Calgary City Hall Thursday afternoon to raise awareness of the civil unrest in Ethiopia.
The protest began with a march from Sunalta Community Hall to spread the word about the slaughter of students in the Oromia region of the African nation.
Organizer Mohamed Abazimab said they are pleased to see the large turnout.
“This is a member of our Ormo community and neighbours of Ethiopians all come to support us,” said Abazimab. “So we really appreciate their support and showing our unity with us.”
He said they hope this rally will send a strong message.
“Don’t kill Ormo students, that is not a solution.”
Reports suggest the students have been killed by security forces during peaceful protests against a planned expansion of the capital city of Addis Ababa, that will displace thousands of farmers from their land without compensation.
