Checkstop tweets leave police disappointed

While it’s not illegal, it’s undermining efforts to keep the city safe.
With Christmas party season already in full swing, police are on high alert trying to nab impaired drivers on Calgary streets.
However, some Twitter accounts have already begun giving away the locations of various Checkstops around the city.
“It’s illogical,” Traffic Sgt. Paul Stacey said. “I can’t imagine that people are out there supporting impaired driving after we’ve seen what impaired drivers are capable of doing to people and destroying people’s lives and that sort of thing. We’re hoping to catch people. We don’t want to tip them off to where we are so they can go a different route and potentially cause some mayhem. We want to catch these people.”
Stacey says they want to catch people off guard, but it’s hard to stop these tweets from coming.
“There’s no way to really stop it, I mean it’s one of those things where people are free to tweet whatever they want, but it continues to amaze and disappoint me,” he said. “We still do catch a lot of people drinking and driving, but how many people get away because of the tweets, it’s difficult to say.”
It’s that unknown that has police hoping law-abiding drivers will stay silent next time they come across a Checkstop.
