Calgary police say a man shot to death in the northeast community of Monterey Park Sunday met up with at least one person in the alley where he was gunned down.
They’ve identified the victim as 26-year old Hussein Merhi of Calgary.
Police were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. and found Merhi suffering from gunshot wounds and he died at the scene.
Staff Sgt. Doug Andrus of the Homicide Unit said they don’t have any suspects at this time and they continue to review CCTV footage.
“We don’t know the motive at this point and to offer one would be speculative, we’re looking into the possibility of his activities which led to a meeting with the individual in the alley,” he said, adding after the altercation in the alley, a dark SUV was spotted fleeing the area.
Andrus said there’s no indication at this time that it was drug-related and witnesses they’ve spoken to so far have been cooperative.
Merhi did not live in the area.
“We do not know why he picked that particular area to meet with an individual or individuals,” Andrus said, adding he did drive to the location. “There’s nothing to indicate that he was there to sell something or buy something.”
At this time, they do not believe the murder is related to other recent slayings in Calgary.
Calgary’s homicide count is now 33.
