Calgarian among ‘Carnegie Heroes’

Four Canadians, including a Calgary man, are among 24 people being honoured with medals and cash from the Pittsburgh-based Carnegie Heroes Fund Commission.
Joshua J. Gardner saved a man whose SUV left the roadway and landed in a golf course pond on July 5, 2014. He was awarded the honour for helping.
The other Canadians include Helen Goulet of Courtenay, B.C. who saved her 89-year-old friend from a house fire in January; Clifford W.J. Peterson, a police officer from Ajax, Ontario, saved a man from falling off an icy bridge in Toronto on December 8, 2013; and Fraser A. Potts of Limoges, Ontario will be honoured for saving a woman from drowning in a suicide attempt in Fairford, Manitoba on May 10, 2013.
The Carnegie Hero Awards, to be formally announced Thursday, are named for Pittsburgh’s Steel Magnate and Philanthropist Andrew Carnegie,
The commission investigates stories of heroism and awards medals and cash several times each year. Since 1904, more than 9800 awardees have been given $37.7-million.
