Organizers thrilled with response to “Shoebox” gift project

The city of Calgary might be going through tough times, but it hasn’t dampened the spirits of people when it comes to charitable efforts.

Dream Real Estate, sponsors of the “Shoebox” project, said it’s collected 744 boxes for the 2015 campaign for distribution to women’s shelters in Calgary, Regina and Saskatoon.

“Calgary itself had, by far, our most submissions and I think that caught a lot of us off guard,” said Ryan Armstrong, V-P of Housing for Dream in western Canada.

“Because of the amount of submissions, we ended up having to expand our reach and work with other shelters and women’s groups in order to distribute all of the boxes.”

Each gift box contains about $50 worth of items, including women’s products, hats, mittens, chocolates and other items that suit everyday needs.

The shoeboxes were donated by staff members of Dream, as well as suppliers, members of the community, and in some cases, schools.
