It’s possible the Salvation Army will reach its $1 million goal for its annual Christmas Kettle campaign.
The organization is about $95,000 away from the target.
“This year our numbers are actually up from last year, and part of that is due to a $100,000 donation from the Wood Automotive Group that we haven’t seen in previous years. So that’s really helped,” says Spokesperson Pam Goodyear.
It comes at a time when there’s been a 20 to 30 per cent increase in demand for the Salvation Army’s year-round services and with its family Christmas program.
“Our applications for people looking for assistance at Christmas has also increased and our last numbers were over 7,500 children that the Salvation Army was been providing assistance for. Yet, our donations of toys hae been down this year,” says Goodyear.
The Salvation Army packed up all its kettles at malls and grocery stores around Calgary at noon Thursday. People can still donate online at fillthekettle.com.
