Fitness centres prepare for Resoluters Rush

It’s a popular New Year’s resolution for many; lose weight and get into shape.

Scott Andrews, director of strength and conditioning at the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA in Calgary told 660 NEWS, the organization is expecting January to be a busy month.

“We’re expecting 30-40 per cent in our gym, so it’s actually bigger than normal times, and many of those are getting on track losing weight, getting into shape, do a 5k run, all sorts of new goals they’re setting themselves up for,” Andrews said.

Andrews added, those who set too-high fitness goals will likely quit before they can make their regime a habit.

“We usually see people staying quite active for the first three to four weeks. Then they don’t really have any set goals that they can actually obtain, we start to see that drop off early February. Unfortunately, it takes about two months or about 66 days to really hammer in a habit,” Andrews explained.

But, there are a couple of good ways to stick to new fitness goals.

“Work with a wellness coach, particiapte in classes, do it with a friend. If you connect it with something you’re a lot more likely to stick through it,” Andrews suggested.

He said, only eight per cent of people who try to get in shape in the new year stick with their goals.
