One of the giants of the game is retiring.
Mike Cvik, NHL linesman, is donning the stripes for the last time in Calgary Tuesday night.
Number 88, who stands 6’9″, and towers over most players has officiated nearly 1,900 games over 29 seasons.
Only six NHL players have played more games: Dave Andreychuk, Chris Chelios, Mark Recchi, Ron Francis, Mark Messier and Gordie Howe.
He tells Sportsnet 960 the Fan, a little ritual at centre ice will be missed.
“It’s the touch of the crest and the fists at centre ice that kind of connects me to, now we’re starting the game and to get focused and away we go,” Cvik said.
The game between the Flames and Lightning will be number 1,868.
“There’s only seven linesmen in the history of the NHL that have done over 1,500 games, so I would probably be in the top ten of games worked by linesmen right now,” he said.
The Flames will more than likely do something to honour the friendly giant, who has been a big part of the game.
