BBB releases top complaints and inquiries in 2015

How was customer service last year in Southern Alberta?

The Better Business Bureau has released a list of the top 10 types of complaints it received in 2015.

Spokesperson Leah Brownridge says the highest amount of complaints was with car dealerships.

“They can be anything to do with customer service, they can be high pressure sales tactics, faulty repairs on their vehicle,” she explained.

Coming in second was utility contractors, and at number three, airlines.

“It could be maybe an airline didn’t honour an online voucher, or a discount or a deal, or it simply overbooked a flight, and now they have to wait for another one,” she said.

Brownridge says the list is a checkpoint for consumers.

“These are some of the industries they need to look out for, and they just need to be extra cautious. It doesn’t mean that they will necessarily come across a scam, it’s just to have that heightened sense of awareness,” she said.

Business owners can also take the opportunity to review their practices, to see if and where they need to improve.

“Really examine, okay, how are we doing when it comes to complaints, do we have a lot of complaints, and if we do, is there any way that we can improve?,” she said.

Brownridge says the BBB helped more than 1.4 million people last year, just in Southern Alberta and East Kootenay.
