After hitting rock bottom, there’s nowhere else to go but up.
That’s the message from the Alberta Liberal Party’s president in the wake of the stunning losses in the last year. Now, the party is looking to rebuild ahead of 2019.
A party executive has declared its intention to hold a leadership race next spring, and given that the NDP was just elected, the Liberals saw no need to rush the matter.
They’re hoping the new leader will be able to re-ignite the moderate base.
President Karen Sevcik said, many of their old MLA’s have offered to help, but the familiar face of former Edmonton-Centre MLA Laurie Blakeman will be missing, after she decided to run for other parties.
However, Sevcik added, they’re encouraged about the future of the Liberal party in the province, especially after the federal elections.
“We found our foundation. People who stuck with us in the last campaign are true Liberals, so we’re building from here,” she said. “We think we have a brand, and it proved strong in the federal election in the fall, and we’re going to move forward as Liberals from here on in.”
