VANCOUVER – The attack that killed six Canadians in Burkina Faso was launched by the same extremists behind a similar siege at an upscale hotel in Mali that left 20 people dead in November.
Security expert David Hyde says al-Qaeda is trying to steal the spotlight from recent ISIS attacks.
“al-Quaeda’s interests have been more regional in nature. Yes, they have wanted to send a message globally. It’s frightening, but it’s not to the extent where they are trying to build their own state.”
Hyde is telling Canadians to exercise caution and do thorough research before traveling to potential conflict zones.
“We’ve already seen a little bit of an uptick overall. We’re also seeing the resurgence of other groups like the Taliban in Afghanistan, and al-Quaeda operating back up there again. al-Quaeda training camps have been discovered back in Afghanistan, which is where this whole thing started.”
