Library use up during economic downturn

While the city continues to face difficult economic times, the Calgary Public Library is seeing more visitors come through their doors.

More than six million people visited one of the city’s 18 libraries last year, partly due to the fact that library cards are now free.

Paul McIntyre Royston, Director of External Relations for the Library, says there are lots of free activities, including many for kids.

“Every two months we put on a program guide called the Library Connect and there’s programs for adults, teens, kids, babies even as young as under six months old. We do things like the Colossal Play Date for kids and Baby Rhyme Time and lots of amazing programs,” he said.

He says they are particularly proud of the free 4,000 square foot early learning play space at the Fish Creek Library.

In addition, McIntyre Royston says they have a homework help program with free tutors and some special programs on teacher PD days.
