B.C. throne speech slamming Alberta called ‘unusual’

A prominent Calgary academic is calling the decision by B.C. premier Christy Clark to slam Alberta in that province’s recent throne speech unusual.

Jack Mintz, President’s Fellow at the U of C of Public Policy as well as Scholar and resident at Columbia Law school, said it’s not something we see.

“To take a bit of a cut at another province in a throne speech, and frankly I don’t think it’s very helpful for gaining politics, for one province to take a swipe like that,” Mintz said.

But Mintz also added that Clark was trying to make an important point about its economic planning and used Alberta as an example of what not to do, adding it was likely a political move by the Liberal government.

The speech says Alberta has lost its focus expecting our resource boom to never end, failed to diversify our economy and lost control of government spending.
